How The Home of Can-Do Changed Lucas’s Life
At The Home of Can-Do, we are privileged to witness incredible transformations in families who embrace our methods. Today, we are honoured to share the inspiring story of a devoted mother and her son, Lucas. This is a journey of perseverance, hope, and the power of connection.
A Mother’s Instinct
Lucas’s mother first noticed something was different when he reached the 12-month mark. He wasn’t meeting key developmental milestones, and where he had previously babbled, he had gone silent. Concerned, she reached out to a health visitor, which led to referrals for a paediatrician and speech therapist. However, the onset of COVID-19 meant long waiting times, and even when help arrived, it was in the form of a frustrating video call.
Rather than waiting passively, she took action. She began researching speech and language support groups on Facebook, which led her to The Can-Do free five-day challenge. For the first time in almost a year, she felt hopeful.
Taking the Leap into Bootcamp
Realising this was the right path for Lucas, she wanted to continue with The Can-Do Bootcamp. However, as a single mother struggling financially, the £450 cost for the 10-week course felt like a significant hurdle. But she didn’t let that stop her. With the support of family and friends, she set up a GoFundMe page and raised the funds in just two days.
Once in the bootcamp, everything changed. Joanne, the founder of The Home of Can-Do, worked closely with Lucas and his mother to build a deep, meaningful connection. Within just three months, Lucas was making eye contact for the first time. Using the play-based techniques Joanne taught, he began learning to communicate—not just verbally but in ways that truly resonated with him.
A Life Transformed
Lucas’s progress has been astounding. He can now say single words in context, sing his favourite songs, and express himself without frustration. The world no longer feels overwhelming for him. In September, he started attending a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, where he is thriving.
His journey continues with support from The Can-Do Club’s termly plan, which helps him progress academically and socially. For Lucas and his mother, being a ‘Can-Doer’ is no longer just a programme—it’s a way of life.
Gratitude and Looking Forward
Lucas has since been diagnosed with autism, global developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, and severe speech delay. While these diagnoses may have once felt daunting, they no longer define him. Instead, his story is one of determination, love, and boundless potential.
His mother shares, “I will be forever grateful for Joanne helping my little boy not only find his voice but find happiness again in life.”
At The Home of Can-Do, we believe every child deserves the chance to communicate, connect, and thrive. Lucas’s story is a testament to the incredible impact of perseverance and the right support system. We are honoured to be part of his journey and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.
